The Therapist, Ken Smith
A native of Greenville, SC, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, and a Master of Education degree (guidance counseling) from Clemson University. I also have a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling degree and a Certificate of Graduate Studies in Psychiatric Rehabilitation from the University of South Carolina-School of Medicine. My graduate studies at the USC-School of Medicine included a 600-hour internship working with patients with severe mental disorders. I am licensed by the State of South Carolina to practice counseling and psychotherapy as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I am certified by the National Association of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the International Association of Trauma Professionals. I have sixteen years of clinical experience in treating adolescents, and adults using individual and group therapies.
Although I provide general counseling and psychotherapeutic services, my specialties include trauma-related disorders; depression & anxiety disorders; marital & relationship issues; prolonged grief disorder, crisis intervention; and severe mental disorders, e.g., schizophrenia. I also work with patients who have tinnitus, a hearing disorder from which I also suffer.
I use an approach based on cognitive theory (CT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in working with patients. However, my specific treatment protocol is always based on sound research and is determined by each patient’s individual needs.
