Expectations.
Many people entering counseling or therapy for the first time do so with a degree of
anxiety, apprehension, or downright fear. I assure you that these feelings of misgiving
are perfectly normal when venturing into something that you have never previously
experienced. People often wonder to themselves as they consider going to counseling
or as they approach their first session, “What will I say?”, “Will I sound foolish or silly?”,
“Will the therapist like me?”, “My problems are insignificant.”, “No one will ever be able
to help me.”
Again, let me assure you that these doubts and negative thoughts are normal, and
that you have nothing to worry about. You are considering therapy because you are
hurting and you’re experiencing painful thoughts and feelings, or maybe you are having
serious issues in your marriage or other relationships. Perhaps you have suffered a
significant loss – death, divorce, job. These and many other reasons are why people
seek counseling from a professional who can help them. They want to feel better and
they’re tired of hurting; they want to relate to others and to themselves in better ways;
they want to lead happier and more effective lives.
In working with me you will always be treated with dignity and respect. In the sessions
you will feel safe, knowing that your confidentiality is assured. You will be accepted
"as you are", never judged. I always try to develop a relationship with my patients that is
empathetic and caring, no matter what issues they bring to the session(s) and no matter
what has occurred in the past. We set out on the journey together; we learn from each
other and, hopefully, the journey leads to wholeness, happiness, and a feeling of
accomplishment.
